REVIEW: Alice in Zombieland

Alice in Zombieland (Alice in Zombieland #1)
Gena Showalter

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Synopsis:

If anyone had told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies.

My thoughts:

I should warn you that, even though the title is suggestive of a Alice in Wonderland retelling, that it's not a full on retelling. Although I can see the parallels that Showalter has pulled from the original children's classic. The reason I'm pointing this out is because I was left in this position. Actually, I feel a little humiliated cause of it. OOSsssh... my cheeks are burning red!

Anyway, back to the actual review, I still really like this book. Alice, better know to us as Ali, was such an awesome sassy character. Her inner monologue had me bawling over with the witty one liners she would come out with. Her sarcastic remarks being ones that I could whole heartedly connect with.

If only you all knew my one liners that I've had to refrain from typing in any of my posts.

The reason why I'm not giving this a full five is very simply the predictability of the plot. I kinda guessed 90% of the plot and how things were going to play out and so I lost the fun in reading it. There was no suspense!

But what lacked in plot was held together by Showalter's characters. Ali was a bell (excuse the pun!) and Cole- terrifyingly hot. He was smouldering if I do say so myself. Ali's grandparents were so accepting of everything and did hold an integral part of the plot. Unlike the usual use in YA Literature, where actually they don't believe anything until it's too late. Well... no that's spoiler-y.

Considering how my expectation were high for this book, it still sort of met them. I need a cute, but deadly urban fantasy and it hit the spot. Cheering me up strangely after finishing Me Before You.
